Surabaya, Indonesia started implementing community based solid waste management after the closure of one of the city’s landfills led to waste piling up on the street. With support from Surabaya’s government, a local NGO, and Kitakyushu, Japan, what started as a community composting project now includes the development of composting centres, temporary disposal sites, the establishment of waste banks, and greater local engagement. This expansion has not only helped reduce waste but helped mitigate climate change.
